IN THIS SUMMIT, IS INDIA BREAKING UP WITH RUSSIA?

India and Russia are unlikely to end their relationship in writing anytime soon.

However, other experts caution that their connection has become a liability for New Delhi's geopolitical goals, particularly as a reliable peacemaker in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The relationship between India and Russia is clearly on the decrease, whilst Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration in India has strengthened ties with the West.

THE LOCATION: BHARAT MANDAPAM

The summit this year is held in New Delhi's Bharat Mandapam, a convention facility that has recently undergone renovation.

The expansive riverbank location is adjacent to Raj Ghat, the Mahatma Gandhi memorial at the site of his cremation, where G20 leaders are anticipated to plant trees, as well as the towers of the Purana Qila fort, built during the Mughal Empire in the 16th century.

WHAT ARE THE KEY ISSUES ON THE G20 AGENDA?

The bloc's deliberations during India's one-year presidency have focused on increasing the amount of loans given to developing countries by multilateral institutions, overhauling the system of international debt, regulating crypto currencies, and the effect of geopolitical unpredictability on the security of food and energy.

There are increasing calls for the G20 to take a strong stance on climate action given that the group is responsible for around 80% of global emissions.

"Since these nations are the largest emitters, the UN wants the G20 to take the initiative on climate change. In regards to global inequality, the UN Secretary-General has also been extremely critical of the G20, according to James Bays, the diplomatic editor for Al Jazeera, who is covering the meeting in New Delhi.

"India is keen that there should be more loans for developing countries and that the richer nations should look at debt forgiveness," Bays added.

There have been debates about crypto currency regulation, and there will undoubtedly be many requests for Russia to resume the Black Sea grain agreement. The world's food supply also remains a concern. I don't believe we have made any progress on this, though, he continued.
